Otoineppu

Located at the northern tip of Nayoro Basin, Otoineppu spans 275 square kilometers with forests covering eighty percent of its territory.

The settlement changed its name from Tokiwa to Otoineppu in 1963, reflecting the central district's designation within the municipal boundaries.

The name Otoineppu originates from Ainu language, referring to the murky waters at the meeting point of Teshio River and its tributary.

The village maintains two educational institutions, an elementary school and a junior high school, serving the local population of 607 residents.

Otoineppu holds the distinction of being the smallest village in Hokkaido, with temperatures ranging from minus six degrees in winter to seventeen in summer.
