Kembuchichoehonnoyakata, Public library in Kenbuchi, Japan.
Kembuchichoehonnoyakata is a public library in Kenbuchi organized into four distinct areas for reading, viewing art, children's activities, and dining. The collection centers on picture books with thousands of titles, arranged across these separate spaces to serve different purposes.
Residents of Kenbuchi started this project in 1988 as part of a town revitalization effort aimed at breathing new life into the region. The official opening came in 1991, marking a turning point for the local community.
The community gathers here to vote on favorite picture books through an annual prize event that shapes the collection. This voting reveals which stories matter most to the people of Kenbuchi.
The facility is divided into comfortable reading spaces for different age groups and interests, with a dedicated play area for children. Artists can display work in the exhibition space, and visitors can enjoy local food at the on-site restaurant.
Inside is a special room filled with wooden balls where children can play and rest between reading sessions. This space gives young visitors a chance to release energy in a safe setting.
