Asahikawa Museum of Sculpture, Art museum and sculpture complex in Asahikawa, Japan.
The Asahikawa Museum of Sculpture is an art gallery housed in a structure that blends traditional Giyofū architecture with Western design influences. The building contains exhibitions of regional and national artwork as well as a specialized collection of sculptural works.
The building was constructed in 1902 as an officers' club for the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army. It was converted into a sculpture museum in 1994 while retaining its original architectural features.
The museum centers on the work of Japanese sculptor Teijiro Nakahara and regularly displays works by artists from the Hokkaido region. The collection reflects the artistic connection between traditional Japanese and modern Western forms.
The museum sits about ten minutes' walk from JR Asahikawa Station and is accessible daily. Visitors should plan time to view works carefully, as the space also offers quiet moments for reflection on the artwork.
An annual awards ceremony takes place on the sculptor's birthday each October, honoring outstanding sculpture achievements. This gathering draws regional and national artists and collectors to celebrate excellence in the medium.
