Asahikawa Museum of Sculpture, Art museum and sculpture complex in Asahikawa, Japan.
The Asahikawa Museum of Sculpture is an art museum in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, housed in a building designed in the Giyōfū style, which combines Japanese and Western architectural elements. The structure is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and holds a collection focused on sculpture alongside works by regional artists.
The building was erected in 1902 as an officers' club for the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army. Nearly a century later, in 1994, it was converted into a sculpture museum without altering its original structure.
The museum focuses on the work of Japanese sculptor Teijiro Nakahara and regularly shows pieces by artists from Hokkaido. Walking through the rooms, visitors can see how local subjects and Western-influenced forms sit side by side in the same halls.
The museum is about a ten-minute walk from JR Asahikawa Station and easy to reach on foot. The rooms are compact, so a slow visit without time pressure allows you to take in the works properly.
Every October, on sculptor Teijiro Nakahara's birthday, the museum hosts an awards ceremony honoring outstanding work in sculpture. The event draws artists and collectors from across Japan, giving the building a rare social energy on that day.
