Arashiyama Park

Arashiyama Park, Public park in Asahikawa, Japan.

Arashiyama Park is a mountain park sitting at about 250 meters elevation with walking paths and an observation platform. From there, you can see the Daisetsuzan mountain range and the Ishikari River stretching across the landscape.

The Hokkaido Development Commission named this place during the Meiji period after the Arashiyama district in Kyoto because of landscape similarities. The name was chosen to reflect how the mountain setting reminded people of that famous location.

The Ainu Culture Forest section shows traditional village buildings and explains the customs of Hokkaido's indigenous people through displays and crafts. You can walk through authentic structures and learn how communities once lived in these mountains.

The walking trails and nature observation areas are free and open year-round for visitors to explore at their own pace. The park center offers seasonal workshops if you want to learn more about the local environment and history.

The park is home to Ezo red foxes and Hokkaido squirrels living freely in their natural mountain habitat, which visitors can sometimes observe. These animals are part of the local ecosystem and provide surprising encounters for those who hike quietly through the paths.
