Ueno Farm, Botanical garden in Asahikawa, Japan.
Ueno Farm is a botanical garden on the outskirts of Asahikawa, on the northern island of Hokkaido, divided into distinct planting areas. Each section features a different selection of perennials and seasonal flowers chosen to thrive in a cold northern climate.
The site was originally a working farm before it was transformed into a public garden in the early 2000s. Yukino Ueno began reshaping the land after training in garden design, turning the family property into what it is today.
Ueno Farm was designed by landscape gardener Yukino Ueno, who drew from English garden traditions and reworked them to suit Hokkaido's short growing season. The result is a style of planting that feels loose and natural rather than formal.
The garden is open from spring through autumn, when the planting is at its fullest, and can be reached from central Asahikawa by bus or car. The paths are flat and easy to follow, so visitors can move through the space at their own pace.
Although Asahikawa is one of the coldest cities in Japan, the long summer days in this northern latitude push plants to grow and flower faster than they would further south. This creates a short but very intense season when the garden changes noticeably from one week to the next.
