Otoineppu, Rural village in Nakagawa district, Japan.
Otoineppu is a village in Hokkaido located at the northern edge of Nayoro Basin, covering approximately 275 square kilometers. Forests blanket roughly eighty percent of the land, creating a heavily wooded environment that dominates the entire region.
The village was originally called Tokiwa before changing its name to Otoineppu in 1963 as part of an administrative reorganization. This renaming reflected a shift in how the central district was designated within the municipal structure.
The name Otoineppu comes from the Ainu language and refers to the murky waters where the Teshio River meets one of its tributaries. This linguistic heritage connects visitors to the indigenous roots of the land and shapes how local place names reflect the natural features around them.
The village has two schools serving the local community: an elementary school and a junior high school located within the settlement. Visitors should prepare for a heavily forested environment and bring appropriate footwear and clothing for changing weather conditions.
The settlement is exceptionally small and ranks among the tiniest villages on the island of Hokkaido. Temperatures shift dramatically from freezing winters around minus 6°C (21°F) to mild summers reaching approximately 17°C (63°F).
