Ashikaga, Historical city in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan

The Watarase River runs through the central part of Ashikaga, with mountains forming a natural boundary along the northern edge of the city.

The Ashikaga clan, who established the Muromachi Shogunate in 1336, originated from this city and maintained significant control over Japan until 1573.

The Ashikaga Gakko, established in 1439, stands as Japan's oldest educational institution, where students studied Confucianism, medicine, and traditional arts.

The city connects to Tokyo through regular train services on both JR East and Tobu Railway lines, with a journey time of approximately 90 minutes.

The Ashikaga Flower Park displays extensive wisteria collections, including a 150-year-old tree that creates a natural tunnel of cascading purple blooms.
