Tamura, Administrative city in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan
Tamura is a city in Fukushima Prefecture located across the Abukuma Mountains, characterized by rolling hills, valleys, and farmland throughout the region. The terrain combines agricultural areas with forested sections that define much of the local landscape.
The city was formed in 2005 when five smaller municipalities merged to create a single administration. This consolidation brought together the towns of Funehiki, Ogoe, Takine, and Tokiwa along with the village of Miyakoji.
Local artisans continue to create pottery and textiles by hand, keeping traditional craft techniques alive in the community. These handmade products remain central to how residents connect with their heritage during seasonal celebrations.
The city is accessible by rail through the JR East Ban'etsu East Line and by car via national routes including Route 288 and the Ban-etsu Expressway. The hilly terrain means different areas are accessed through various roads, so plan accordingly depending on your destination.
The Miyakoji district underwent evacuation following the 2011 nuclear incident but reopened for daytime use in 2014. This gradual return marked one of the first steps toward normalcy for the affected area.
