Tarumizu

Tarumizu is a city on the northwestern Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima, extending across roughly 160 square kilometers. Its center lies along Kagoshima Bay, with mountains rising inland behind the developed areas.

The place began as a village established in 1889, was elevated to town status in 1924, and gained official city status in 1958. This progression shows how the area grew over more than a century.

The Senbon Ichoen Garden displays around 1,200 ginkgo trees planted on a mountainside by local residents over several decades. The spot has become a gathering place where visitors can experience the trees' golden foliage during autumn months.

The city connects via National Routes 220 and 224 and relies economically on agriculture, fishing, and food processing. When exploring, keep in mind that these industries shape the local daily rhythm.

From the waterfront, you can see Sakurajima volcano looming directly across the bay, and its mineral deposits enrich the local soil's fertility. This natural link between volcanic activity and farming shapes life here.
