Hachinohe is a port town on the Pacific coast in Aomori Prefecture that spreads along the bay. The center sits slightly inland from the industrial harbor, while residential neighborhoods fill the flat plains between coast and hills.
The area was originally inhabited by Emishi settlers before the Nanbu clan established a castle town here in the mid-17th century. The harbor grew rapidly during the 20th century and became a major center for fishing and shipbuilding.
The Sansha Taisai moves through the streets over five days in summer, with decorated floats accompanied by loud drummers and dancers. The parade combines traditional costumes with modern lighting effects, while spectators stand along the edges eating snacks.
The market near Mutsu-Minato Station opens early in the morning and sells fresh fish and vegetables directly from producers. Visitors should arrive in the first few hours when selection is broadest and fishermen are setting out their goods.
The Korekawa Jomon Museum displays pottery and tools from prehistoric settlements that stood here thousands of years ago. Some of the exhibited clay vessels carry elaborate patterns that were pressed by hand into the soft clay before it was fired.
