Kasaoka

Kasaoka is a port city in Okayama Prefecture along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, including 31 islands within its boundaries. The landscape ranges from mountainous areas in the north to flat reclaimed land near the southern shore.

During the Edo period, the Mizuno clan supported large reclamation projects that created new rice fields and expanded agriculture in the region. This reshaping of the coastal land continued to shape the area for centuries.

The city preserves a traditional dance performed each August on Shiraishi-jima Island, handed down through generations by local families. This performance during Obon brings together residents and visitors from the surrounding coastal communities.

The railway station connects the city with other coastal towns and provides access to nearby islands through port facilities. Most islands can be reached by regular ferry services departing from the waterfront.

A specialized museum dedicates itself entirely to studying and protecting horseshoe crabs, ancient sea creatures living in protected waters off the coast. The facility houses breeding pools where visitors can observe these living fossils up close.
