Located in southwestern Niigata City, Nishi-ku stretches over 176 square kilometers with borders reaching the Sea of Japan and Mount Yahiko.

The area emerged from the merger of multiple municipalities, including the town of Sone and village of Iwamuro, before becoming an official ward in 2005.
