Kashima, Industrial port city in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan

Kashima sits between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Kitaura, combining coastal zones with flat inland terrain. The city spreads along several roads and canals, with industrial plants lining the eastern waterfront.

The settlement gained municipal status in the late 19th century and grew through minor annexations over the following decades. During the second half of the 20th century, the focus shifted toward heavy industry and port development.

The shrine serves as a point of reference for several classical martial arts schools and draws practitioners throughout the year. Festival traditions connect rituals around the sea with agricultural customs from the inland areas.

The area is best explored by car or regional trains, as public transport within the city remains limited. Visitors should allow time to see both the coastal sections and the agricultural zones to the west.

The local football club plays in a stadium that hosted several international matches during the 2002 World Cup. Today the venue regularly draws fans from across the region.
