Iōtorishima, Volcanic island in Okinawa Islands, Japan
Iōtorishima is a volcanic island in Japan located off the coast of Kumejima. It features two linked volcanic peaks: the southern Gusuku with a lava dome and the northern Iōdake topped by a crater filled with sulfurous water.
The island experienced its first recorded eruption in 1664, which caused landslides and casualties. Subsequent volcanic activity and earthquakes in 1903 eventually led to permanent evacuation, with the last residents departing by 1958.
The island served as a source of sulfur for local communities. Residents extracted this resource directly from the volcanic features and traded it across the region.
Access to the island is only by boat, with conditions highly dependent on weather and sea state. Visitors should plan with flexibility and check accessibility requirements in advance before attempting to reach the site.
The island became known as a sulfur production site after settlement, making it economically important for centuries. This small volcanic outpost supported a working population through resource extraction before being permanently abandoned.
