Shōryūdō, Solutional cave in Okinawa, Japan
Shōryūdō is a limestone cave on Okinawa with multiple chambers marked by stalactites and stalagmites. These formations developed as mineral-rich water gradually built up deposits across countless years.
The cave formed thousands of years ago through slow dissolution of limestone by underground water. This gradual geological process shaped the structure visible today.
The name Shōryūdō means Rising Dragon Cave, reflecting how local people interpret the cave's form as resembling a dragon climbing toward the sky.
The cave maintains steady temperatures throughout the year, so bring a light jacket. Wear sturdy shoes to safely navigate the uneven surfaces and passages.
Bats inhabit the darker sections of the cave, creating their own ecosystems within the various chambers.
