Yoron Castle

Yoron Castle is a ruin from the Ryukyu Kingdom built on elevated ground where coral stone walls form a pattern resembling a sleeping dragon. The site covers a significant area and contains multiple structures within its boundaries.

Construction began in the 15th century under orders from the Ryukyu Kingdom to assert control over the region but was never completed due to military conflicts. The unfinished state reflects the turbulent period when the kingdom faced increasing external pressures.

Two shrines stand within the ruins: one dedicated to local deities and another where traditional full moon dances occur throughout the year. These structures show how people have used and honored this place over time.

The ruins are located on elevated terrain that makes them easy to spot and explore. Renting a bicycle is a practical way to visit the site and see other locations across the island in the same day.

From this hilltop, visitors can spot five different islands on clear days including Okinawa and three smaller islands, revealing why this location held strategic importance. The expansive view helps explain the kingdom's choice to build here.
