Shimbashi Station, Railway interchange station in Minato, Japan
Shimbashi Station is a railway interchange in Minato with multiple levels that include three surface platforms and one underground platform. The facility connects several operating companies including JR East, Tokyo Metro, Toei and Yurikamome, which run different lines through the city center.
The original building from 1872 formed the terminus of Japan's first railway line running to Yokohama. The current facility opened in 1909 under the name Karasumori and was later renamed after the historic location.
The station takes its name from a former Shintō shrine that once stood nearby. Commuters often pick up snacks or small gifts at the many shops lining the passageways on their way home.
Passengers move through multiple levels by following signage that directs them toward different companies. Visitors arriving for the first time should allow extra time to navigate between transfer points.
Underground passages house tiny bars where office workers stop after their shift ends. The reconstructed old terminal nearby displays a section of track from the time of the first railway line.
