Banetsu Monogatari, Passenger train service in Akiha-ku, Japan
Banetsu Monogatari is a passenger train running between Niigata and Aizu-Wakamatsu using seven converted 12 series coaches with large observation windows throughout. The design lets passengers watch the landscape from nearly every angle during their journey.
The service started on April 29, 1999, operated by East Japan Railway Company. The line features a JNR Class C57 steam locomotive for special excursion runs.
The train displays regional artwork inside and serves local food that connects travelers with traditions from both Niigata and Fukushima. The experience brings these two prefectures together through what passengers see and taste during their journey.
Onboard facilities include a children's play area, multiple washrooms, and a dedicated observation car with reclining seats. Plan time to explore these different sections during your ride.
The SuRoFu 12 102 Green observation car features seats arranged all facing one direction. Its black and sienna exterior makes it stand out visually from other railway cars.
