Namekawa Great Falls

Namekawa Great Falls drops over rhyolite rock formations, splitting into multiple streams that cascade across a wide natural rock face in Yamagata Prefecture. The water flows down in a distinctive fan pattern, creating layers of white water against the dark stone.

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment included this formation in its official Top 100 Waterfalls list in 1990, recognizing its natural importance. This designation helped protect the area and establish it as a key natural landmark in the region.

The waterfall sits near Namekawa Onsen, a traditional hot spring resort where visitors can experience Japanese bathing customs after their hike. The thermal waters serve as a natural gathering place for people seeking restoration and relaxation.

The hike to the waterfall base requires moderate physical effort with elevation changes throughout the route. Wear proper footwear and bring enough water, as the path winds through wooded terrain that can be muddy after rain.

The waterfall sits at around 860 meters elevation and displays a rare horsetail pattern where water flows down through multiple narrow adjacent channels. This pattern emerges from how the rhyolite stone naturally divides the flow into parallel streams.
