Munakata, Sacred shrine complex in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan

Munakata is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, stretching along the coast of the Hibiki Gulf and including several offshore islands in the Genkai Sea. The city area combines residential neighborhoods with forested hills and coastal stretches that open onto open water.

Between the 4th and the 9th century, a powerful clan from this area controlled sea trade routes to Korea and China. This maritime link brought objects and influences from the mainland into the region and shaped the development of the shrines.

The three shrines in town bear names referring to three goddesses believed to protect travelers at sea. Locals visit these places at the start of the year and during special occasions to pray for safe journeys and good fortune.

The city can be reached by JR trains from Hakata in less than an hour, with several stations located within the city area. Visitors planning to see the islands should check ferry connections and access restrictions in advance.

The sacred island of Okinoshima, uninhabited for centuries, holds thousands of ritual objects from ancient times. For religious reasons, access is completely closed to the public, and only a single priest lives there for ten days at a time.
