Ghibli Museum, Art museum in Mitaka, Japan
The Ghibli Museum is an animation museum in Shimo-Renjaku within the Mitaka city area inside Inokashira Park. The facility extends across multiple gallery rooms and presents exhibitions about film productions and drawing techniques on three floors.
The museum opened on October 1, 2001 and was designed by Nihon Sekkei. Director Miyazaki Hayao provided sketches and creative contributions to the architectural concept during the design phase.
The building takes its name from the animation studio and displays hand-drawn sketches along with workshop models from its productions. Visitors can follow in several rooms how animators and filmmakers develop their stories and bring them to life.
Admission tickets must be purchased months in advance through authorized sellers, as no tickets are available on site. Entry times are strictly controlled and visitors should arrive on time to avoid waiting.
A small cinema inside screens short animated films of 15 minutes each that cannot be seen anywhere else. The program changes several times a year and offers visitors new stories each time.
