Shinjō Station is a railway interchange in Shinjo where multiple train lines meet and serve both local and regional passengers. The station has multiple platforms arranged to handle different track gauges, including standard gauge and narrow gauge services.
The station opened in 1903 as rail networks expanded across northern Japan and grew in importance over the following decades. In 1987 it became part of the JR East network after privatization, and by 1999 it reached a new role as the terminus for the Yamagata Shinkansen line.
The station earned recognition as one of the Top 100 Stations of Tohoku Region, representing the importance of rail connections in northern Japan.
The station has staffed ticket counters where you can purchase tickets and get travel information from the helpful personnel. There are also travel services available on-site to assist with journey planning and bookings.
In December 1999, the station expanded its services by becoming the terminus for the Yamagata Shinkansen line, connecting with the Ou Main Line.
