Midori-ku

Midori Ward is an administrative division of Yokohama located in the eastern part of the city, covering an area of about 25 square kilometers. Most of the terrain slopes upward into hills, except for the northeastern section where the Tsurumi River creates a flatter basin.

The region was once directly controlled land under the Tokugawa shogunate and remained that way for centuries until becoming an independent ward of Yokohama in 1969. This change marked the shift from historical feudal administration to modern urban organization.

Several universities and educational facilities here shape daily life and draw many students to the area. The neighborhoods feel livelier because of this academic presence, visible in student-filled streets and local gathering spots.

The area has several train lines operated by JR East and Tokyu, plus major roads and an expressway that make it easily accessible. When exploring hilly neighborhoods, expect slopes and stairways, so comfortable walking shoes and time are helpful.

During the Meiji period, this area became a center for silk production and played a key role in Japan's textile industry growth. Traces of this industrial past can still be seen in older structures and the layout of certain neighborhoods.
