Sendai Airport, International airport in Natori, Japan.
Sendai Airport is a commercial airport in southern Miyagi Prefecture handling domestic and international connections across northeastern Japan. It sits between the cities of Natori and Iwanuma on the Pacific coast, roughly 13 kilometers from the center of Sendai.
The site was established in 1940 as a training facility for the imperial army and opened for civilian flights after the war ended. In the decades that followed, the facility grew into an important hub for the Tohoku region.
The airport takes its name from the former castle town of Sendai and connects modern aviation with local history. Travelers find regional specialties and crafts from Miyagi Prefecture in the arrival hall, often chosen by visitors as keepsakes.
The Sendai Airport Line connects the terminal to Sendai Station in roughly 25 minutes, with trains running regularly. International travelers should plan extra time for passport control and security checks, especially during holiday periods.
In March 2011 the site was flooded by a tsunami, yet reconstruction efforts enabled relief flights just weeks later. This rapid response made the terminal a launchpad for rescue operations along the entire northeastern coast.
