Sakae

Sakae is a commercial district in Nagoya featuring numerous department stores, underground shopping centers, and the 180-meter Nagoya TV Tower at its center. The area spans a large zone with a mix of traditional and modern shopping and entertainment options.

The district emerged following Nagoya's founding in 1612 by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and transformed from castle grounds into a commercial center during the Meiji Restoration period. This shift made it a major hub for trade and business activity in the region.

The northern section of Hisaya Odori Park offers outdoor shopping spaces and restaurants with regular weekend events that bring together local traditions and modern entertainment. These activities show how the area shapes daily life and draws people across generations.

Visitors can reach the area through multiple subway lines, including the Higashiyama and Meijo lines, converging at Sakae or Yabacho stations. The central location makes it easy to navigate and access different attractions on foot.

The Oasis 21 complex features a water-filled glass structure called Water Spaceship, housing a bus terminal and public gathering spaces beneath its arching form. This design is a modern example of blending public functions with water elements in an unexpected way.
