Yokohama Bay Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Yokohama, Japan
This structure in Yokohama connects Daikoku Pier with Honmoku Pier and carries traffic on two separate levels across the bay. The two steel towers rise 172 meters above the water and support cables that hold a main span measuring 460 meters.
Construction began in the early 1980s and the crossing opened to traffic in September 1989 as part of a larger harbor development plan. The project aimed to reduce congestion around the port and improve connections between industrial areas along the waterfront.
The bridge received the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Tanaka Prize and earned recognition as one of the 100 significant bridges in Japan.
The upper deck carries fast-moving highway traffic while the lower level serves as a slower route for local journeys. Both levels require toll payment and the crossing takes only a few minutes depending on conditions.
A pedestrian walkway called Yokohama Sky Walk runs beneath the roadway and allows visitors to watch large container ships and tankers pass directly below the structure. The walkway also offers close views of the harbor operations and the steel cables from an unusual angle.
