Kushiro Subprefecture

Kushiro Subprefecture spans 5,997 square kilometers across eastern Hokkaido, including eight municipalities and extensive coastal territories along the North Pacific Ocean.

The region gained its administrative status in November 1897, underwent a name change to Kushironokuni in 1922, and returned to its original designation in 1957.

The subprefecture maintains a population of 1,900 red-crowned cranes, which represent an essential element of Japanese natural heritage in the region.

The administrative center, Kushiro City, connects to other areas through an airport, railway networks, and multiple national routes crossing the territory.

The region contains Japan's largest wetland system, the Kushiro Marsh, which supports numerous species and ecological systems throughout the year.
