Kushiro Wetland, Wildlife refuge and Ramsar wetland in Kushiro, Japan.

Kushiro Wetland is a wildlife refuge spanning broad stretches of marshland, grassy plains, and waterways across several towns and villages in Hokkaidō. Wooden boardwalks and raised platforms wind through the vegetation and offer viewpoints over the flat terrain, which is carved by channels and small streams.

The wetland gained protection during the second half of the 20th century after drainage projects threatened its extent. Recognition as a Ramsar site brought international awareness of its importance for migrating birds and rare plant and animal species.

Local groups organize guided walks through the marsh edges, and nature centers display exhibits about the relationship between residents and the wet ground. Many visitors come in winter to watch cranes dancing and feeding, a sight that has drawn people from the region for generations.

Several observation points and visitor centers sit at the edges of the wetland and can be reached by car or public transport. Pathways can become slippery after rain or thawing snow, so sturdy footwear is advisable and checking weather conditions before setting out is helpful.

During the cold months, some of the overwintering cranes follow regular routes across the ice that repeat in the same spots each year. Scientists can read up to two thousand years of regional climate history in the peat profile.
