Sounkyo, Canyon in Kamikawa, Japan.
The Sounkyo gorge extends over 24 kilometers with 100-meter-high cliffs along the Ishikari River within Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido.
The formation of Sounkyo canyon resulted from volcanic activity of the Daisetsuzan group 30,000 years ago, with subsequent erosion shaping the steep cliffs.
The name originates from the Ainu language word 'Souunbetsu,' which translates to 'the river with many waterfalls' in the indigenous culture.
Direct buses connect Asahikawa Station to Sounkyo every one to two hours, with the journey taking approximately two hours through the mountainous terrain.
The Ginga-no-taki and Ryusei-no-taki waterfalls cascade down the cliffs, earning recognition among Japan's top 100 waterfalls.
