Asahidake Ropeway, Aerial tramway in Higashikawa, Japan
The Asahidake Ropeway is an aerial tramway in Higashikawa, Hokkaido, linking two stations within the alpine zone of Daisetsuzan National Park. The cabin rises through open mountain terrain, offering clear views of forests, volcanic fields, and the surrounding peaks throughout the ride.
The ropeway was built in 1968 to give visitors easier access to the mountains. It was later modernized through a major renovation that improved safety and comfort.
The ropeway is seen as one of the easiest ways to reach the alpine zone of Daisetsuzan National Park without a long hike. At the top station, visitors in summer can see rare mountain plants that grow only at these elevations.
The ride lasts around 10 minutes, and the cabin has windows on all sides so the views are unobstructed. Lines tend to form quickly during peak season, especially in summer and during autumn foliage, so an early arrival is a good idea.
The upper station sits at around 1,600 meters and is one of the few places in Japan where you can reach an active volcanic landscape with steam vents and bare rock without hiking. Even in midsummer, it can be noticeably colder at the top than in the valley below, so a jacket is worth bringing regardless of the season.
