Mount Tokachi

Mount Tokachi is an active volcano in Daisetsuzan National Park that rises to 2,077 meters, with its slopes displaying a mix of different ecosystems and rock formations. Several hiking routes cut through the mountain, offering varied terrain and views as you gain elevation.

The mountain has been volcanically active for centuries, with documented eruptions recorded throughout its past and the most recent one occurring in 2004. This ongoing geological activity has shaped the landscape over long periods and continues to influence the mountain region today.

The mountain held sacred meaning for the Ainu people of Hokkaido, who saw it as an important part of their spiritual world and daily connection to nature. This relationship between the land and local communities remains woven into how people understand and move through the region today.

The climb to the summit takes roughly four to six hours and requires moderate fitness and preparation beforehand. Mountain huts along the route provide shelter and basic supplies for those staying overnight during the hiking season.

Natural hot springs emerge from the mountainside where visitors can rest while watching steam and gases rise from volcanic vents in the rock. These warm waters provide a surprising comfort during or after the demanding climb.
