Shirahige Falls, Waterfall in Shirogane Onsen, Japan
Shirahige Falls is a waterfall in the Biei valley that drops about 30 meters over a wide ledge into the river below. The water flows into the Biei River, which has distinctive colors in this section due to the mineral content from the volcanic springs.
The falls were formed by volcanic activity from Mount Tokachi, which forced water through multiple geological layers to emerge at this spot. The underlying lava structures are millions of years old and continue to shape how water flows through the valley today.
The name means White Beard Falls in Japanese, referring to how the cascading water appears against the dark volcanic rock. Visitors immediately notice the striking contrast between the white flowing water and the black basalt cliff face.
The falls are reachable from the town of Biei and lie in a valley best explored on foot. Wear sturdy shoes as the path to the viewing area crosses uneven terrain and can be slippery near the water.
In winter, the falling water does not freeze, yet the rising mist crystallizes on surrounding trees, coating them in gleaming ice. Meanwhile, the river below retains its deep blue-green color, creating a striking visual contrast that few visitors expect.
