Kitakitsune Farm, Fox sanctuary in Onneyu Onsen, Japan
Kitakitsune Farm is a sanctuary for red foxes set on hillside terrain where around 70 animals roam freely and live their natural lives. The place spans a large area and gives the foxes room to keep their wild instincts.
The farm opened in 1983 with the goal of creating a living space for red foxes native to Hokkaido. Since then it has grown into a protection project for these northern species.
The red foxes here play an important role in the local ecosystem and show the Japanese tradition of protecting wild animals in their natural setting. Visitors can watch the animals interact with each other and follow their natural behaviors.
Access is available daily with longer hours in warmer months and shorter hours from November through March. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and prepare for changeable weather, especially in the colder seasons.
The foxes can approach visitors on their own without direct contact being allowed, which creates a rare experience. This setup allows you to watch the animals in completely undisturbed, natural behavior.
