Kamuiwakka Falls, Hot spring waterfall in Shiretoko National Park, Japan

Kamuiwakka is a waterfall in Shiretoko National Park that cascades down volcanic rocks while releasing warm water that stays around 38 degrees Celsius throughout its course. The stream guides hikers through multiple cascades of varying temperatures, eventually where mineral-rich volcanic waters blend with fresh mountain streams.

The site formed through volcanic activity and was initially valued by the Ainu people before being incorporated into modern tourism later on. In 2006, authorities introduced protection measures and visitor restrictions to preserve the natural environment and ensure visitor safety.

The name Kamuiwakka comes from the Ainu language of Hokkaido's indigenous people and means 'water of the Gods', referring to the thermal nature of this place. Visitors can still feel this cultural meaning today when they walk through the warm waters and experience the connection between the natural environment and Ainu traditions.

Walking requires solid footwear and care on wet rocks since thermal activity makes the ground slippery. Helmet use is mandatory, and visitors should arrive early in the day when the trails are less crowded.

Visitors can climb through four successive waterfall cascades, with each level offering different temperatures and water qualities. This variety makes the entire ascent a changing experience with shifting physical sensations at each stage.
