Nusamai Bridge, Road bridge in Kushiro, Japan
Nusamai Bridge is a road bridge in Kushiro, Japan, built from concrete and stretching 124 meters (407 feet) across the Kushiro River. The structure links the northern and southern parts of the city through an arched design.
The current structure was erected in 1976, replacing the fifth iteration of crossings at this location along the river. An earlier European-style design had stood here since 1928.
Bronze sculptures on each pier represent spring, summer, autumn, and winter, marking an early example of publicly funded art integrated into Japanese infrastructure. The figures have become a familiar part of the crossing for both locals and travelers who pause to photograph them.
The crossing is roughly a 15-minute walk from JR Kushiro Station and offers a good vantage point over the river. Paid parking for 202 vehicles is available nearby along the riverbank.
The view from the crossing at sunset over the Kushiro River is regarded by mariners worldwide as one of the notable natural scenes often compared to other well-known locations. Visitors often arrive in late afternoon to watch the changing colors across the water.
