Iwafune, Former administrative division in Shimotsuga District, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
Iwafune extended across 46.74 square kilometers at the southern edge of the Ashio Mountains, including Mount Iwafune and surrounding agricultural lands.
Established in 1889 as a village through the consolidation of multiple settlements, Iwafune gained town status in 1962 and merged into Tochigi City in 2014.
The municipal area maintained strong connections with neighboring Tochigi City and Sano City, where nearly 38 percent of residents commuted for work.
The region served a population of 17,575 residents until 2014, providing municipal services through the Iwafune Town Hall and local government facilities.
Iwafune marked the final town dissolution during the Heisei era municipal merger movements in Japan, concluding a significant administrative restructuring period.
