Kozushima spans 18.58 square kilometers across the Philippine Sea, featuring white sandy beaches, hiking trails, and the central volcano Mount Tenjo at 572 meters high.
The village received official establishment on October 1, 1923, during the administrative reorganization of the Izu Islands into distinct towns and villages.
Local fishermen maintain traditional fishing practices, contributing to the supply of Golden Eye Sea Bream while producing Moriwaka, a regional variation of shochu spirits.
Visitors reach the island via high-speed ferries from Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo, taking four hours, or overnight ships that complete the journey in twelve hours.
The International Dark Sky Park designation recognizes Kozushima's clear night skies, allowing observations of numerous stars from Mount Tenjo's observation points.
