Awa no Mikoto Shrine, Shinto shrine in Japan
Awa no Mikoto Shrine is a small Shinto shrine on Kozushima Island located near the coast close to Nagahama Beach, sometimes called Nagahama-sama. The site features simple wooden structures and a quiet worship space, with the ocean breeze often present in the area.
The shrine is one of the few high-ranking shrines in Tokyo recognized since ancient times and listed in the Engishiki jinmyocho, a record made about 1000 years ago. This early recognition reflects the deep historical connection between the shrine and the local community.
The shrine centers on the goddess Awanome-no-Mikoto, who watches over fishing and safe passage at sea. Visitors notice locals placing small stones filled with sand called Shiobana as offerings, a ritual that connects them directly to the sea and their ancestors.
The shrine sits near Nagahama Coast and is accessible by walking, though it offers simple structures without modern amenities. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and expect basic conditions, as this is a traditional non-commercial site.
Legend says the goddess Awanome-no-Mikoto transformed her jewels into stones that now color the nearby Nagahama Beach in shades of red, blue, yellow, and white. Visitors are discouraged from taking stones home, as it is believed to bring misfortune.
