Ryōsen-ji, Buddhist temple in Shimoda, Japan

The temple grounds contain three large Gorintō stone monuments that mark the graves of several Shimoda government officials from past centuries.

Established in 1635 by prelate Nitchō, Ryōsen-ji gained recognition as the location where the Treaty of Peace and Amity between Japan and the United States was signed in 1854.

The temple maintains a collection of three thousand artifacts documenting cross-cultural interactions between Japan and Western nations from the 16th to 19th centuries.

Visitors can reach the temple through a 10-minute walk from Shimoda Station, following the historical Perry Road that leads directly to the entrance.

The temple grounds witnessed the first Western music concert in Japan during Commodore Perry's military ceremonies, documented in a lithograph by German artist William Heine.
