Suzaki Imperial Villa, Imperial villa in Suzaki, Shimoda City, Japan

Suzaki Imperial Villa is a single-story residence blending Japanese and Western architectural styles, located on the coast of Sagami Bay on the Izu Peninsula. The building features coastal views and expansive grounds that reflect the design preferences of its imperial residents.

The Imperial Household Agency established this residence in 1971, the same year the nearby Numazu Imperial Villa was converted to public use. This new residence was created to provide a private coastal retreat for the imperial family.

The villa maintains spaces dedicated to traditional Japanese ceremonies and incorporates design elements found across other Imperial residences in Japan.

The villa is not open for regular public visits, but the grounds may be accessible during special events authorized by the Imperial Household Agency. Check ahead about any scheduled openings, as these occasions are limited and vary throughout the year.

Emperor Showa conducted marine biology research in the villa's laboratory, producing scientific papers about aquatic life. This scholarly work reveals a lesser-explored aspect of imperial life that most visitors overlook.
