Ajigasawa, Coastal town in Nishitsugaru District, Japan
Ajigasawa is a town in Nishitsugaru District along the Sea of Japan coast with a substantial land area. Mount Iwaki rises to the southeast, while Shirakami-Sanchi forests stretch to the east and define the surrounding landscape.
The place began as a village in 1889 and became a town in 1955 following a merger with four neighboring settlements. This consolidation reshaped local administration and enabled the growth of the modern settlement.
Local fishermen practice traditional catch methods for squid, flounder, and various other fish species in coastal waters. These craft techniques are deeply rooted in the community's identity and shape the daily rhythm of life along the shore.
The town connects to surrounding areas via the Gonō Line railway, expressway, and National Route 101 with regular services. Visitors should plan for rain and snow in winter months, as weather conditions significantly affect travel arrangements.
Since 1984 the town has maintained a partnership with São Sebastião in Brazil, connecting two coastal communities on opposite sides of the globe. This relationship is known among residents and contributes to a worldly outlook in the community.
