Kahoku is a small town nestled in a valley along the Mogami River in Yamagata Prefecture, surrounded by mountains on two sides. The area is known for cherry orchards stretching across the landscape and safflower fields, while traditional workshops continue to produce handmade items.
The area was once part of the ancient Dewa Province before being established as the village of Yachi in the late 1800s and later transformed into Kahoku in the mid-1900s. Older buildings and farmsteads throughout the town reflect this long history.
The name Kahoku and the safflower as the town's symbol reflect the agricultural roots that shape daily life here. The red and yellow blossoms are visible across fields in spring, while small workshops produce handmade slippers and everyday items that show how residents work and make use of local traditions.
The town is easily accessible by car or bus along national routes, but has no passenger train station. Roads are well maintained, and the journey offers peaceful views of fields and forests nearby.
Kahoku maintains a friendship with the American town of Canon City that began over 30 years ago and continues today with occasional visits and exchange programs. This uncommon international connection allows residents to understand the lifestyles and cultures of two very different places.
