Yahiko, Sacred mountain village in Niigata, Japan
The village spreads across 25 square kilometers at the base of Mount Yahiko, featuring cedar forests and traditional Japanese architecture against coastal landscapes.
The settlement formed around an eighth-century Shinto shrine, becoming an official village in 1889 during Japan's municipal system reorganization.
The Yukake Festival involves a procession through the village streets carrying sacred hot spring water while participants request blessings for health and success.
Visitors reach the village via the JR Yahiko Line to Yahiko Station, with connections available from both Tokyo through Tsubame-sanjo Station or Niigata Station.
The village produces specialized agricultural products including premium rice, edamame, and shiitake mushrooms, supported by the regional wind pattern called Yahiko Oroshi.
