Ashikita, Coastal town in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan
Ashikita is a coastal town in southwestern Kumamoto Prefecture that stretches along the Yatsushiro Sea with the Kuma River running through it. The landscape combines fishing harbors, forested hills inland, and rural residential areas with a quiet, spread-out layout.
The town was formed in 1955 when three separate municipalities merged, with Sashiki having been established as a town back in 1903. This merger shaped the administrative structure that continues today.
You can see Utase net fishing demonstrated at the harbor, where traditional boats from earlier decades are displayed and still in use by local fishermen. The methods have remained largely unchanged, giving visitors insight into how people here have worked the sea for generations.
The town center is compact and walkable, with shops and services clustered around the harbor area. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring, while summer brings heat and humidity.
The Ashikita Seaside Park has a Roller Luge track where visitors ride non-powered carts down natural slopes. This is the only facility of its kind throughout Kyushu.
