Yakumo, Coastal town in southern Hokkaido, Japan.

Yakumo is a town in southern Hokkaido situated between the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The area is framed by mountains and features diverse terrain across its expansive territory.

The town began as a village in 1881 and later merged with a neighboring settlement before gaining town status in the early 1900s. This progression reflects how local communities gradually consolidated and developed over time.

The Yakumo Folk Museum features traditional wooden bear sculptures created by local artisans over generations. These carvings reflect how people in the region expressed their connection to nature and craftsmanship through their art.

The town connects to the rest of Hokkaido via the Hakodate Main Line railway and National Routes 5 and 229. This makes it easy to reach by train or car when traveling to or from nearby regions.

The Kumaishi Fishing Port brings in fresh catches throughout the year that reflect the surrounding waters. The local fishery remains an important part of daily life and food culture in the area.
