Iwanai

Iwanai is a coastal town along the western shore of Hokkaido that stretches across mountainous terrain down to the sea. The settlement has several harbor areas and access points that connect the mountain regions to the ocean.

The town started as a seasonal fishing location in the 15th century and became a permanent settlement by the mid-1700s. A major fire in 1954 reshaped its buildings and left a lasting mark on how the town looks today.

The local residents of Iwanai maintain a distinct fisherman dialect that differentiates their speech patterns from other Japanese speakers in the region.

The town is easily accessed from the sea and has several small fishing harbors. Visitors can find restaurants focused on local fish, winter outdoor activities, and good transportation links to nearby areas.

A significant fire in 1954 transformed the town architecture from traditional wooden structures to a more western style, while preserving religious buildings.
