Mount Iwaonupuri, Active volcano in Kutchan, Japan
Mount Iwaonupuri is an active volcano in the Niseko Volcanic Group in northeastern Hokkaido. It rises to about 1,116 meters and features routes accessible to hikers and skiers depending on the season.
The volcano formed long ago as part of Hokkaido's geological history and now sits within the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park. The park was established to protect this region's natural environment.
The mountain's name comes from the Ainu language, the indigenous people of the region. This reflects the historic bond between local communities and the surrounding peaks.
The mountain is best reached via Goshiki Onsen, where taxi services can take you to the trailhead. Summer through autumn is ideal for hiking, while winter opens backcountry skiing routes.
The mountain stands out for offering completely different experiences across seasons: backcountry skiing in winter and trekking in summer. The steep climb makes reaching the summit feel like a real achievement for many visitors.
