Shintotsukawa, Agricultural town in Sorachi Subprefecture, Japan

Shintotsukawa is a town in Sorachi Subprefecture in central Hokkaido, situated where the Ishikari and Sorachi Rivers converge. It is surrounded by mountain ranges and serves as an agricultural center for the surrounding region.

The town was founded in 1889 when settlers from Totsukawa in Nara Prefecture relocated here following severe flooding in their homeland. This resettlement established the foundation for the community that exists today.

The mascot Komezo, a white rice spirit figure, represents the local farming traditions and remains visible in the town's daily life. This symbol reflects how agriculture shapes the identity and character of the community.

The town is accessible by road and maintains a rural character with basic facilities for visitors. Exploring the farming landscape and riverside areas provides a good sense of daily life here.

The convergence of the Ishikari and Sorachi Rivers in the eastern section creates a distinctive geographical meeting point. These water resources were crucial to why settlers chose this location for farming and community building.
