Shibetsu

Shibetsu is a coastal town on eastern Hokkaido's shore, positioned between the Sea of Okhotsk and the mountainous Shiretoko Peninsula. The landscape combines ocean views with forested hills and creates a setting where sea and mountains frame the settlement.

The settlement began as a fishing village during the Meiji period and became an official municipality in 1923, gaining town status in 1958. This progression reflected growing importance tied to sea access and fishing resources that became central to the region.

A long sandy spit extends far into the sea, creating one of Japan's most remarkable sand formations and unusual landscape. This geographic feature shapes distinct habitats and coastal views rarely seen elsewhere in the country.
