Buddhist Monuments in the Hōryū-ji Area

The Buddhist Monuments area contains 48 religious structures spread across multiple locations, including temples, monasteries, and the Hokki-ji pagoda.

Prince Shōtoku established the temple complex during the seventh century, creating what would become some of the oldest wooden buildings still standing.

The monuments display the architectural progression of Buddhist temples in Japan through their construction methods, decorative elements, and spatial arrangements.

Visitors can reach the monuments by taking a train to JR Horyuji Station and then walking twenty minutes or using the local bus service.

The Tamamushi Shrine contains detailed narrative paintings depicting Buddhist stories, including the tale of a Bodhisattva sacrificing himself for a tigress.
